Ten years ago, The Story So Far released their self-titled third album—an emotionally loaded, no-frills record that felt like a turning point for the band. They didn’t reinvent the wheel, but they definitely sharpened it.

The Story So Far – Nerve

At the heart of it all was Nerve. Not the loudest track on the album, but easily one of the most gut-wrenching.

Released on May 19, 2015, the record followed the band’s breakout sophomore effort What You Don’t See, and it landed with the weight of a band that had grown up a little—but hadn’t lost the fire. Nerve was the curveball: slower, moodier, and built on a steady groove that felt more “slow burn” than “stage dive.”

Parker Cannon doesn’t shout on Nerve. He simmers. The frustration in the song is quieter, more lived-in. It’s about running in emotional circles, and being completely worn out by it—not angry, just tired. And somehow, that made it hit even harder.

Back then, it caught a lot of fans off guard. TSSF had made their name on punchy, fast-paced tracks that left no room to breathe. But Nerve gave them (and us) space. It felt personal. It felt real. And it showed that the band could slow things down without losing their edge.

The rest of the album still slapped—Heavy Gloom, Mock, and Phantom all held their own—but Nerve was the track people came back to. It stuck.

Ten years later, it still does.

The self-titled album marked a shift. It wasn’t just a collection of songs; it was a sign of growth—for the band, and for the fans who grew up with them. And Nerve? That one still aches, in all the right ways.
