State Champs are back, and they’re coming in swinging with their brand-new single, “Common Sense.” Out now via Pure Noise Records, the track is everything you’d hope for from the Albany pop-punk crew—fast, punchy, and packed with the kind of hooks that make you want to scream the words back instantly. But this time around, there’s a heavier, darker edge woven into the sound, giving it that extra bite while still keeping true to the Champs’ DNA.

Frontman Derek DiScanio explained the meaning behind the song, saying it’s about throwing yourself completely into someone while being blind to the fact you never had anything in common in the first place. It’s raw, it’s honest, and paired with those crunchy riffs and high-energy melodies, it feels like a perfect mix of classic Champs and a bold new direction.

“Common Sense” is the first taste of new music since their self-titled record dropped back in November 2024. That album proved a huge milestone for the band, earning praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, AltPress, Rock Sound, and New Noise Magazine, who all applauded its balance of nostalgic Warped Tour spirit and fresh, modern pop-punk vibes. With tracks like “Light Blue,” “Too Late To Say,” and “Silver Cloud” already staples in their setlist, the record quickly cemented itself as one of their most celebrated releases to date.

And if you’ve been missing State Champs live, you won’t have to wait long. They’re currently gearing up for a packed fall run in the US with A Day to Remember and Yellowcard before hitting major festivals like Four Chord, Vans Warped Tour Orlando, and Aftershock. Then, this winter, they’ll make their way back across the pond to join Don Broco on a run of UK arena shows that’s guaranteed to be massive. You can find full details and tickets through the band’s website.

Fifteen years in, it’s clear State Champs aren’t slowing down any time soon. With “Common Sense,” they’ve proven once again why they’re still one of the most exciting names flying the flag for modern pop punk. Catchy, powerful, and brimming with energy—this one’s bound to be a fan favourite.
