Ryan Scott Graham is back with Speak Low, releasing his first new single in eight years with “One Good Look.”
Best known for playing bass in State Champs, Ryan has always had a more introspective side to his songwriting, and Speak Low is where that really comes through. “One Good Look” marks the start of a new chapter for the project, following his last LP Nearsighted, and it’s clear this isn’t just a one-off return..
The track leans into a more stripped back and emotional approach, built around the kind of songwriting Ryan’s always been drawn to. “I’m a sensitive guy and I like sensitive music,” he explains. “I’ve always been drawn to lyrics that hit you in the stomach and music that feels like a specific moment or feeling.”
Lyrically, the song focuses on the slow breakdown of a relationship, touching on complacency and what happens when communication starts to fade. It’s personal, honest, and very much what Speak Low is all about.
What makes this release stand out even more is how it’s being done. There’s no label, no management, no wider team behind it. Everything from writing to artwork to release is handled by Ryan himself.
“I don’t have a label, management, a team of any sort, so everything falls on you if you want it to be heard,” he says. “I’m doing the art, I’m writing everything, I’m attempting to do promo, I’m distributing.”
It’s a big shift from life in a major touring band, and he’s experienced both sides of the industry. While being independent offers full control, it also means figuring everything out yourself. “You really have to grind if you want your music to cut through the noise,” he admits, adding that despite the challenges, the DIY route is something he genuinely values.

If you’re expecting something similar to State Champs, this isn’t that. Speak Low is a different lane entirely, giving Ryan the space to experiment and push into more personal territory.
And this is only the beginning. A second single, “Birds-Eye View,” is set to drop March 31 alongside a 7-inch release featuring both tracks and a couple of home recorded demos. Beyond that, he’s working towards a full-length album, currently nearing completion and planned for release later this year.
For now, “One Good Look” feels like exactly what it is. A fresh start, done on his own terms!
