Life in Idle might not be a household name just yet, but if you’re into Midwest emo, pop-punk, or alternative rock, this Dayton, Ohio-based band deserves a spot on your playlist. Since forming in 2011, they’ve been steadily making waves in the underground scene, blending heartfelt lyrics, intricate guitar work, and a sound that nods to bands like Hot Mulligan and Tiny Moving Parts. With their latest album Continuity Error(s), Life in Idle proves they’re ready for bigger stages and wider recognition.

A Decade in the Making

The band’s lineup—David French (guitar, vocals), John Garybush (guitar, vocals), Joe Friend (bass), and Al Hall (drums)—has been together for years, playing everywhere from local festivals to opening for national acts. Their music walks the fine line between nostalgia and innovation, capturing the emotional highs and lows of growing up, growing apart, and figuring life out.

They first turned heads with singles like Waterwell, a track that dives deep into the pain of losing a close friend. Released in 2021, the song showcased their knack for blending raw emotion with technical, math-rock-inspired riffs. It was the kind of song that made fans feel something—and that’s exactly what Life in Idle is all about.

Continuity Error(s) and the Next Chapter

August 2023 saw the release of Continuity Error(s), their sophomore album recorded with producer Gary Cioni and co-produced by Chris Freeman of Hot Mulligan. The record feels like a love letter to Midwest emo, packed with soaring choruses, intricate guitar melodies, and a lyrical honesty that hits hard. It’s clear the band has grown, both sonically and emotionally, making this album a defining moment in their career.
