John Floreani is back with his first solo release in four years. The new track, “The Kind Of Man I Am”, arrived on May 15 and marks a long awaited return from the Trophy Eyes vocalist, blending deeply personal songwriting with the stripped back style fans have come to expect from his solo work.

While Trophy Eyes have continued to grow as one of Australia’s most recognised modern punk bands, Floreani’s solo material has always offered something more intimate. His latest single leans heavily into themes of self reflection, relationships and internal struggle, with the songwriter opening up about feeling like a burden to the people closest to him.
Speaking on the track, Floreani explained that the song started without any real expectations while sitting with a guitar, eventually becoming what he describes as both a love song and an apology. He said the track focuses on “the internal anguish of being a burden on the people I love” and the unhealthy narratives that can come with that. The singer also described the song as an attempt to capture “how slippery the mind is, and how subjective one’s reality is.”
“The Kind Of Man I Am” also arrives alongside a lyric video, giving fans their first new solo material since his lengthy hiatus from releasing under his own name. Alongside the new single, Floreani has also announced a special one night only show to celebrate the release.
Outside of Trophy Eyes, Floreani has continued to build a strong reputation as a solo songwriter, blending elements of folk, Americana, alt rock and acoustic driven storytelling into his music. With “The Kind Of Man I Am”, he’s picking up right where he left off while opening a brand new chapter at the same time.
