Death Cab for Cutie have released “Stone Over Water”, the final preview of their upcoming album I Built You A Tower, which arrives this Friday, June 5th.
The new track offers one last glimpse into the band’s eleventh studio album and arrives alongside a busy release week for the indie rock veterans. The song follows lead single “Riptides”, which recently became Death Cab for Cutie’s ninth No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart.
Speaking about the meaning behind the track, the band said: “‘Stone Over Water’ is a song about trying to convince everyone around you and most importantly, yourself, that you are okay when you definitely are not.”
The release also coincides with a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where the band performed “Riptides” ahead of the album’s arrival. They also played a special sold out underplay show in Los Angeles as anticipation continues to build around the record.
I Built You A Tower marks Death Cab for Cutie’s first album since returning to their independent roots after more than 20 years with Atlantic Records. Produced and engineered by John Congleton, the record was assembled during a focused three week recording period across Los Angeles, Seattle, Bellingham and Portland.
The album follows a significant chapter for the band, who recently celebrated the anniversaries of Transatlanticism and Plans with sold out tours around the world. Those experiences helped shape the creative direction of the new record, with the band describing it as a reconnection with the confidence and ethos that defined their earliest years.
Death Cab for Cutie will support the release with a UK and European tour this September and October, including dates in Manchester, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Bristol and two nights at London’s Troxy.

I Built You A Tower arrives June 5th via ANTI Records.
