Converge don’t really do soft returns, and they definitely don’t do autopilot. With the release of new single We Were Never The Same, the band remind everyone why they’ve remained one of the most vital forces in heavy music for over three decades. This is the latest glimpse into Love Is Not Enough, their upcoming album out February 13th via Epitaph and Deathwish, and it feels less like a comeback moment and more like a continuation of something that never stopped evolving.

Converge – We Were Never The Same

There’s a certain weight that comes with a Converge release now. Not hype, not expectation, but intention. You can hear it straight away on We Were Never The Same. It’s raw without being messy, reflective without losing its bite. The track closes the album, and it carries that end of journey feeling, the kind that doesn’t offer easy resolution but sits with the reality of loss, grief, and clarity that only comes when something is gone.

Jacob Bannon’s words on the song hit hard because they come from a real place. Written while sitting in the car park of a funeral home, the lyrics wrestle with why we’re so quick to gather in mourning but less present when it comes to cherishing what we have. It’s not presented as a grand statement, more an honest question, one that feels uncomfortable because it rings true. That honesty has always been Converge’s strength. They don’t tell you how to feel, they just open the door and let you sit with it.

Love Is Not Enough as a whole sounds like a band distilling everything they’ve learned over the years into something sharp and focused. There’s no excess here. Every track moves with purpose, from the opening title song through to this closing moment. Recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City in Salem, the album feels tightly wound but expansive at the same time, balancing aggression with clarity rather than blurring the two together.

What makes this release land even harder is the context. Converge aren’t chasing relevance or reacting to trends. They’ve already written some of the most influential records in heavy music history, from Jane Doe to You Come Before You, and even more left field projects like Bloodmoon: I. Their influence runs quietly through the underground, shaping bands who may not even realise where those instincts came from.

Visually, Love Is Not Enough carries the same level of care. Bannon once again handled the artwork, creating individual images for each track alongside a striking cover that depicts a celestial witness looking down on a world in turmoil. It feels fitting for a record that reflects on modern life without pretending to have answers.

Despite the heavy themes, there’s something strangely reassuring about Converge in 2026. As Bannon puts it, this band remains essential to their lives, and that sense of purpose comes through clearly. There’s a maturity here, not in the sense of mellowing out, but in seeing deeper, asking harder questions, and trusting the listener to come along for the ride.

Alongside the new music, Converge have also confirmed appearances at select European and UK summer festivals, including Outbreak Festival in Manchester, Jera On Air, Resurrection Fest and more. It’s another reminder that this band still thrives in loud, communal spaces, where these songs can breathe and connect in real time.

Album Artwork

We Were Never The Same doesn’t try to be a statement single. It doesn’t need to be. It’s simply Converge doing what they’ve always done best, turning real emotion into something heavy, thoughtful, and uncomfortably relatable. Love Is Not Enough is shaping up to be another chapter that proves why they still matter.
