You know that heart-dropping feeling when your car does something it absolutely shouldn’t? Now imagine that… in a van, on tour, flying down a Texas interstate with your whole band onboard. That’s exactly what happened to Vancouver pop-punk heavyweights Chief State, and it’s the chaotic, real-life moment that inspired their brand-new single, “No Brakes.”
Frontman Fraser Simpson tells it like it is: “Summer 2022 we were sailing down the interstate heading from Houston to Austin when all of a sudden — no brakes. I was driving at the time and didn’t mention it to the guys until I managed to grind the van to a halt.” And that was just the beginning. Stranded for a week in Austin (shoutout to Rare Bloom for the couch space), they waited for a replacement part while a mechanic told them the van was too rusted to even drive down the street. Shows were canceled. Money ran out. Spirits hit rock bottom.
But if there’s one thing Chief State do better than anyone, it’s turning chaos into an anthem. The defiant line “Nothing ever goes our way” echoes through the track — a frustrated sigh from a band that’s been through it all, yet refuses to quit. “No Brakes” is everything fans love about Chief State: raw, punchy, and painfully relatable. Produced by Tim Creviston (Spiritbox, Youth Fountain) and mastered by Stu McKillop (By A Thread, Midnight Peg), the track captures that classic blend of melody, melancholy, and pure energy that makes pop-punk feel so alive.
It’s not just another single — it’s a survival story wrapped in three minutes of emotional adrenaline. You can almost hear the grind of the van brakes in the guitars and feel the anxiety of being stuck hundreds of miles from home in every lyric. Yet somehow, it still makes you want to jump around your room like everything’s going to be okay.
And because Chief State can’t sit still for long, they’re hitting the road again this month, joining Calling All Captains, Violet Night, and Gutter King for a run of Canadian dates that’s shaping up to be pure mayhem in the best way. The message is clear: no matter what happens, Chief State aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

Whether you’re blasting this one in your car (hopefully with working brakes) or screaming along from the crowd, “No Brakes” is a reminder that sometimes the best stories come from the scariest moments — and if you’re going to crash, at least make it sound this good.
