Sum 41’s breakout single Fat Lip turns 25 today, marking a major milestone for one of the most recognisable tracks of the early 2000s. Released on April 22, 2001, the song quickly pushed the band from underground buzz to mainstream attention.

Taken from their debut album All Killer No Filler, “Fat Lip” became their first major hit, reaching number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart and opening the door to a much wider audience. At a time when pop punk was already gaining momentum, the track stood out for how it blended punk and rap influences in a way that cut through.

Speaking on the track, frontman Deryck Whibley explained how much work went into it: “I worked on this song for a good year or more before I even mentioned it or showed it to anyone in the band… It took a lot of work and maneuvering to fit all the parts together and make it feel natural and not 5 different songs cut and pasted together.” The song only fully came together later in the process, once the band locked in the rap verses together.

25 years on, “Fat Lip” remains one of Sum 41’s most recognisable songs and a key entry point for new listeners. It marked the moment the band broke through globally and still stands as one of the defining tracks of early 2000s pop punk!
