Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus isn’t just a pop-punk legend—he’s also got a keen eye for art. That’s why, back in 2011, he and his wife, Skye, picked up a Banksy piece titled Crude Oil (Vettriano). Now, more than a decade later, the painting has sold at auction for a staggering £4.3 million (about $5.5 million), proving that Hoppus’ taste goes beyond just writing timeless anthems.
Banksy Meets Blink-182
For those unfamiliar with the piece, Crude Oil (Vettriano) is Banksy’s take on The Singing Butler, a famous painting by Scottish artist Jack Vettriano. But in true Banksy style, this version comes with a twist—added into the scene is a sinking oil tanker and figures in hazmat suits, turning the elegant original into a biting environmental commentary.
Hoppus, known for his love of art that challenges norms, displayed the painting proudly in his Los Angeles home for years. But when the opportunity arose to put it up for auction, he saw it as a chance to do some good.
Where’s the Money Going?
This wasn’t just a quick flip for cash. A portion of the proceeds from the sale is going toward medical charities and the California Fire Foundation, causes that Hoppus has been actively supporting—especially after his own battle with cancer in 2021.
A Punk Rock Investment
Hoppus’ Banksy buy turned out to be one of the best investments he could’ve made. What was once a cool addition to his home is now one of the most talked-about art sales of the year. Whether it’s music or art, Hoppus continues to prove that he’s got a knack for picking out things that make an impact—both culturally and financially.
Who knew that pop-punk and street art would make such a perfect match?
