Back in 2002, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker did something that, at the time, felt like a detour. But in hindsight, it was a turning point. Box Car Racer dropped on May 21st of that year — a moody, melodic, and sometimes downright heavy record that gave Blink-182 fans something they hadn’t heard before: emotional depth with a little bit of post-hardcore edge.

Box Car Racer – There Is

For a band that technically wasn’t supposed to be a band at all, Box Car Racer left a huge impact. It wasn’t just an experimental outlet — it was a clear signal that DeLonge, in particular, had more to say than what pop punk’s fast pace usually allowed. Tracks like “There Is” and “I Feel So” hinted at the kind of introspection that would later show up in Blink’s self-titled era. It was raw, stripped back, and serious — but it still had Barker’s explosive drumming, and just enough punk DNA to keep fans locked in.

Box Car Racer – I Feel So

Despite being a one-off project, the record sparked something. It led to tension within Blink-182 (Mark Hoppus wasn’t involved), but it also laid the groundwork for everything that came after — from the darker tones of Untitled to the birth of Angels & Airwaves.

Looking back, Box Car Racer wasn’t a side quest. It was a warning shot — that this scene, and these artists, were about to grow up. Twenty-three years later, it still feels like the kind of album you find when you’re looking for more than a catchy hook. It’s a time capsule of early-2000s unrest, packed into 12 tracks that still sound as restless as ever.

If you know, you know.
