Death Cab for Cutie have officially announced their 11th studio album I Built You A Tower, arriving June 5 via ANTI Records. Alongside the news, the band have shared the album’s first single, “Riptides”, giving fans their first taste of the record.

Riptides

The album marks a significant moment for the long running indie rock group. After more than two decades with Atlantic Records, Death Cab for Cutie have returned to their independent roots by signing with ANTI. The new record was produced and engineered by John Congleton and recorded during a fast paced three week stretch between Animal Rites studio in Los Angeles and the band members’ homes across Seattle, Bellingham, Los Angeles and Portland.

Frontman Ben Gibbard described the new single “Riptides” as a reflection on the emotional weight of personal struggles against a much larger backdrop. He explained, “Riptides is about the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale. And how when these two elements intertwine themselves in our psyches, it feels utterly paralyzing.”

The new album was shaped during a busy period for the band, following the huge anniversary tours celebrating Transatlanticism and Plans. Those shows pushed the band creatively and helped spark the direction for the new record. As guitarist Dave Depper explained, “The anniversary tours exorcised any nostalgia in our systems. We felt part of this powerful force greater than all of us and went into the studio with a sense of how can we capture that feeling and put it into something new.”

Lyrically, I Built You A Tower explores grief, personal change and moving forward. Gibbard describes the idea of the “tower” as a place where emotions are stored away in order to keep going, even if those feelings eventually break through again.

I built You a Tower UK/EU Tour

Alongside the album announcement, Death Cab for Cutie have also confirmed a UK and European tour for September. The run will include shows in Manchester, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Bristol and London before continuing across mainland Europe.
