San Diego pop punk trio Super Sometimes have officially announced their debut album Show the World What’s Underneath, set for release on May 15 via Pure Noise Records. Alongside the announcement, the band have shared the first taste of the record with a brand new single and music video for “Afterthought”.

Afterthought

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the newer wave of pop punk bands coming through the scene, Super Sometimes are quickly becoming a name worth remembering. The band have been steadily building momentum from their local San Diego scene out to wider audiences online and on the road, and this new album feels like a big step forward.

“Afterthought” opens the record and immediately sets the tone. According to the band, the track felt like the obvious starting point as soon as it was written. “From the beautifully melancholic verse to the finger-point inducing chorus, the song is haunting and riddled with passion in both its lyrics and vocal delivery,” they explain. The song dives into the feeling of longing for someone who treats you like an afterthought, a theme that sits right at the heart of the band’s emotional but energetic take on pop punk.

For the album itself, Super Sometimes teamed up once again with longtime collaborator Zach Tuch and worked alongside names that many fans of the genre will recognise. Writing sessions included help from Knuckle Puck’s Nick Casasanto, Hot Mulligan’s Chris Freeman and producer Kyle Black, giving the record a strong connection to the current wave of modern pop punk.

Across its ten tracks, Show the World What’s Underneath pulls influence from both sides of the genre’s timeline. You can hear the spirit of bands like State Champs, The Story So Far and Seaway mixed with the classic foundations laid by blink 182, New Found Glory and Green Day. The result is a record that leans into skate punk energy, catchy hooks and the kind of honest coming of age songwriting that has always defined the genre.

Lyrically, the album touches on growing up, relationships falling apart and the uncertainty that comes with figuring out your place in the world. It reflects a band who are still in their late teens and early twenties but already fully committed to chasing music wherever it takes them.

“This album is us staking our flag in the ground as one of the torchbearers of pop punk,” the band say. “There’s a little bit of something for everybody, and our take on the genre will definitely be a breath of fresh air for those who have been looking for something a little different in the scene.”

Super Sometimes will also be hitting the road soon, supporting Arm’s Length on their upcoming North American tour alongside The Callous Daoboys and Harrison Gordon. With a run of shows lined up and a debut album on the way, it feels like things are only just getting started for the San Diego trio.
