Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has officially joined the ownership group of the Oakland Ballers, an independent minor league baseball team. The move comes as a response to the Oakland Athletics’ controversial departure to Las Vegas, which left many East Bay fans without a local team to support.
Armstrong, a lifelong Oakland resident and former A’s fan, has been vocal about his frustration with the team’s relocation. Now, he’s channeling that energy into bringing baseball back to the community. “After the A’s left, the town was heartbroken. The Ballers are going to bring good vibes back to Oakland and the broader East Bay,” Armstrong said in a statement.
The Oakland Ballers, also known as the “B’s,” are set to play their second season in the Pioneer League, an MLB-partnered independent league. Their home games take place at Raimondi Park in West Oakland, a historic venue that has recently been renovated to accommodate the growing support for the team.
Armstrong isn’t the only high-profile name involved. Oakland rap legend Too $hort has also joined as an investor, further cementing the team’s deep cultural ties to the city. The Ballers’ ownership group has made it clear that they’re not just about baseball—they’re about preserving Oakland’s identity as a sports town.
With the season kicking off on May 20, the Ballers hope to fill the void left by the A’s departure and give local fans a team they can truly call their own. Armstrong’s involvement adds even more excitement, bringing the energy of punk rock to Oakland’s baseball revival.
