Green Day has never been shy about making a statement, and during their recent Melbourne show, Billie Joe Armstrong made it clear that Vice President JD Vance is not on his list of favorite people.
While performing their 2004 epic Jesus of Suburbia, Armstrong switched up the lyrics to take a direct jab at Vance. The original line—“Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?”—was changed to: “Am I retarded or am I just JD Vance?” Yeah… no subtlety there.
And he wasn’t done. Armstrong followed up by asking the crowd:
“Don’t you want politicians to shut the f* up? Don’t you want Elon Musk to shut the f*** up? Don’t you want Donald Trump to shut the f*** up?”**
Given Green Day’s long history of political commentary (American Idiot, anyone?), this is hardly out of character. From calling out George W. Bush to performing in front of a massive “Trump Hates Me” sign, the band has built a legacy of using their platform to say exactly what’s on their minds.
Whether you love them for it or roll your eyes, Green Day’s message remains loud and clear: they’re going to call it like they see it—no matter who’s in their crosshairs.
Are you backing Green Day’s latest political moment, or do you prefer your punk rock without the politics? Let us know!
