Just when you thought Weezer couldn’t get any weirder—in the best way possible—they go and announce they’re working on a movie. Yes, a movie. And no, it’s not your typical behind-the-music documentary.

The news came straight from Rivers Cuomo himself during Weezer’s surprise Coachella set this past weekend. “We’ve been busy making the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks,” Rivers told the crowd. “But when Coachella called us up and said, ‘Hey Weezer, could you guys make it out for a surprise appearance?’ We were like, ‘Heck yeah!’”

And just like that, a thousand questions were born.

Here’s what we know so far: the project is reportedly titled Weezer: Security Threat and has been filming recently in downtown Los Angeles. A public filming notice spotted in the area listed “simulated bullet effects,” “atmospheric smoke,” and “special effects,” suggesting that this won’t just be guitars and behind-the-scenes interviews—it’s apparently part action film, part band documentary.

Which, honestly, sounds very Weezer.

No word yet on a release date, plot, or even whether the band is playing themselves or stepping into full-blown action hero roles. But if there’s one band weird enough, self-aware enough, and beloved enough to pull off a rock-and-roll action comedy with heart, it’s Weezer.

It’s also not the first time they’ve gone cinematic. Over the years, they’ve released high-concept music videos, dabbled in narrative storytelling (see: the Pork and Beans video chaos), and even leaned into sci-fi themes with their Voyage to the Blue Planet concert film in 2024. So in hindsight? A full-blown movie was inevitable.

Until more details emerge, all we can say is: cue the slow-motion walk, turn the amps up to eleven, and get ready for whatever Weezer: Security Threat turns out to be.

Because when it comes to Weezer, expect the unexpected.
